FTBs would give up beer and cigs for a home

Almost of all first-time buyers would be prepared to give up alcohol if it meant they could get on the property ladder at an earlier stage, according to research commissioned by Abbey.

A survey of almost 1,478 people commissioned by Abbey discovered 49% of those questioned would be willing to give up the booze - except in the North east where the figure was just 12% - and over half (53%) would give up holidays if it meant they could get on the home ownership ladder sooner. A further 43% said they would be prepared to give up smoking while a worrying one in 20 would switch off the heating if it contributed to the homebuying fund. But just one in five (21%) said they were prepared to move back in with their parents to raise the necessary funds - the figure again being low...
