Miners soar as Barclays posts £2.98bn profit

Miners are leading the FTSE 100 higher this morning, as Barclays announced a near £3bn pre-tax profit for the first half of 2009.

  London’s blue-chip index was up 25.47 points (0.55%) to 4633.83 points at 8:40am. Miners are holding three of the five top positions, with oil and gas service provider Petrofac leading the way, up 7.86% to 890p. Randgold Resources is in second, adding 3.16% to £37.50; while Anglo American is following closely, 2.8% ahead to £19.84. Barclays makes an appearance in the fourth slot gaining 2.75% to £3.10 after posting pre-tax profits of £2.98bn for the first six months of 2009.
