The conference season is over and the papers have space for stories that don't involve politics. This is a good thing.
I’m not a huge fan of politics - you can see it in the etymology of the word: “poli” being Latin for “many”; and "tics" meaning “bloodsucking parasites”. Some politicians are better than others of course, but on the whole politicians are like nappies: they both need changing regularly - and for the same reason. One of the chief problems with politicians is most of them talk such rubbish. And at conference they go into overdrive. The speeches are designed to make lies sound truthful, to make profligacy sound frugal, and to give verbal flatulence the appearance of solidity. At least there...
