Worldwide about $200bn (£108bn) is invested in global commodities compared with $45 trillion in equities and $9.2 trillion in bonds. This compares to $2.8 trillion invested in commodity-related shares, 14 times the amount invested into commodity funds. The bulk of this money comes from US investors and this can partly be explained by the shortage of authorised funds offering investors access to commodity futures in the European market.
