There is little doubt that UK citizens are becoming more mobile. According to the Office for National Statistics, long-term emigration from the UK has increased “significantly” over the last decade, from around 363,000 people in 2002 to a peak of 427,000 in 2010. More importantly, far fewer British expatriates are retirees than might originally have been thought: of the 3.6 million people that emigrated between 2001 and 2011, two million were of working age.
