Financial planning, as many advisers would say, is where the real value lies for clients, but are clients willing to pay for it? Carmen Reichman finds out...

What do these two scenarios have in common? 1) "And my recommendation is… do nothing, you are just fine. That's £750 please." 2) Adviser: "I'd recommend you invest in x." Client: "On reflection, I think I'll pass on this occasion." Adviser: "No worries, that's £1,500 please." On both occasions, of course, the client, who found the adviser with a view to buy a product is faced with a bill without actually buying anything.
