Introducing a tiered inheritance tax band would cut the tax paid by nine out of ten people but still add an extra £150m a year to the Treasury coffers, says the IPPR.
Proposals published in the Fair Dues report this week by the IPPR suggests IHT could be made fairer by cutting the IHT rate above £263,000 for "middle class" families from 40% to 22%, adding a middle band for all amounts above £288,000 to 40% and introducing an additional 50% higher-rate band for property and goods valued above £763,000. However, this is just one of several proposals laid out by the IPPR, as other options considered include switching the terminology from "tax on estates" to "tax on inheritance".
