The average house price is above the inheritance tax threshold of £285,000 in 10% of English towns, new research from Halifax claims.
The lender says the number of homes which have a value above the IHT threshold is two and a half time more than five years ago - now reaching 48 of English towns - when only 4% of English towns had an average house price above the then threshold of £242,000. The overwhelming majority of towns - 46 out of a total of 48 - are in the south of England while the other two towns above the IHT threshold are Wilmslow in Cheshire and Ilkley in West Yorkshire.
