The amount of money paid out in private medical insurance (PMI) claims and the number of people with PMI cover through the workplace reached record levels in 2005, according to figures from the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
The ABI’s latest PMI figures reveal £2.284bn was paid out in claims in 2005 compared with £2.217bn in 2004, while the total number of PMI subscribers was 3,677,000, up 0.33% from 3,665,000 in 2004. Of the total there were 2,665,000 corporate PMI subscribers, up 1.95% from 2,614,000 in 2004, and 1,012,000 personal subscribers, down from 1,052,000 in 2004. Meanwhile, the total number of people covered rose from 6,524,000 in 2004 to 6,550,000 in 2005 and the total gross earned premiums rose from £2.891bn to £2.984bn.
