The average UK house burst through the £150,000 price level in March, thanks to monthly house price inflation of 2.2%, which took annualised inflation to 18.5%, Halifax says.
Quarterly inflation was a sturdy 5.1%. The speed of price changes vary across the country. Only about 9% in the Greater London area in the past 12 months, compared to the leading rate of 36% in the North and Wales. However, Halifax sees no signs price rises are about to slow. Supply-side problems are still the main cause of price rises, Halifax says, with numbers of properties for sale on estate agents’ books nearing record lows last seen in May 2002.
