The aggregate funding position - total assets minus total liabilities - of defined benefit schemes improved by over £40bn over the last month, the Pension Protection Fund says.
The lifeboat fund said its PPF7800 index showed the aggregate deficit of UK schemes fell from £200.1bn at the end of June to £158.1bn at the end of July. However, this compares with a deficit of £18.8bn in July 2008. The PPF estimated the total deficit of schemes in deficit in July 2009 improved to £179.0bn from £215.8bn at the end of June 2009. It said, in July 2008, the aggregate deficit of all schemes in deficit stood at £77.7bn.
