The Gurkhas have lost a High Court test case with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) over their pension rights today.
Pension rights were amended in 1997 to give Gurkhas equal pension rights with their UK counterparts. However, those Gurkhas who retired prior to 1 July 1997 are only entitled to a third of the income of UK-based veterans. Their pension scheme paid substantially lower benefits based on the cost of living in Nepal; the homeland to which veterans traditionally retired.
