Afternoon Markets: Dow jumps 2% on Greece rescue hopes

The Dow Jones advanced more than 2% in early trading as investors reacted positively to signs Greece could get help from the European Union (EU).

Following news the EU will hold a key meeting on Thursday to discuss its highly-indebted nations, the Dow shot up more than 210 points, or 2.15%, to smash back through the through the 10,000 barrier. At shortly after 5.45pm GMT, the index was up 212.75 points, or 2.15%, to 10,121.14 Caterpillar led early gains following an upgrade from Morgan Stanley while Coca-Cola advanced after reporting fourth quarter results in line with expectations. Meanwhile in London, the FTSE survived a late dip to remain over 5,100 at close. The index finished almost 20 points, or 0.38%, up at 5,111....
