French President Nicolas Sarkozy threatened to exit the euro unless German Chancellor Angela Merkel backed the EU's €750bn safety net for the single currency.

Sarkozy said he would walk out of the talks and warned of lasting damage to Franco-German relations unless Merkel agreed to the deal, the Guardian reports. "It was a standup argument. He was shouting and bawling," an official in Brussels said. "It was Sarkozy on steroids," a European diplomat added. "He is always very energetic. This time he was very emotional, too." Spanish newspaper El País revealed the French leader banged his fist on the table during last Friday's meeting.
