Home sales hit three-year Christmas high

The number of homes sold in December 2010 was the highest for three years, despite the traditional seasonal holiday dip, new figures show.

The number of sales agreed last month were up 8.2% on December 2009 and 56.5% on December the previous year, according to UK 'for sale' sign contractor Agency Express. Despite a 27% drop in month-on-month house sales in December - in line with the historic trend of a dip in activity at the end of the year - last month was still 32% busier than January 2010. Meanwhile, the number of properties put up for sale was 22.5% higher last month than in December 2009 and 37.1% higher than December 2008.
