More than 9,000 dead got state pension in 2010

More than 9,000 dead British expats continued to receive their state pension last year, it has been revealed.

In a written question in the House of Lords yesterday, Lord Laird asked the government how many people receiving state pension abroad "were found not to be alive last year after data-matching or checking life certificates". Lord Freud, Parliamentary under-secretary for the DWP, answered a total of 9,374 people were found to have died when their data was checked. Cases of governments continuing to pay state benefits to the deceased hit the headlines last year. In August, it was revealed Greece was paying pensions to 321 dead people.
