MPs could debate 'granny tax' as petition tops 100,000 mark

The e-petition against the government's decision to freeze the personal tax allowance for people aged 65 and over has attracted more than 100,000 signatures.

When an e-petition receives 100,000 signatures or more, the issue it describes is considered by a backbench committee for Parliamentary debate. In his 2012 Budget, Chancellor George Osborne announced that from April this year the government will freeze the personal allowance at £10,500 for those born between 1938 and 1948, and at £10,660 for people born before 1938. This is alongside plans to raise the personal allowance for people of working age to £10,000 over the next few years, effectively phasing out the pensioner benefit.
