"Why so brief a speech?" asked the chairman of the improbably-sized investment company Prandeamus Asset Management as I returned to our table after introducing the 2018 Professional Adviser Awards.

"Because I prefer not to make the same mistake twice," I shrugged. "Last year, I was labouring under the misapprehension I should attempt to be entertaining and that may have been ambitious. "As you might remember, I went for a sort of quasi best man's speech that tried to mix a review of the previous 12 months with something that, if looked at sympathetically, in the right light and with a bit of a squint might just have passed for humour - not to mention my financially-oriented ‘knock-knock' jokes."
