We have all heard of the 'nanny state', but recently I came across a term I hadn't heard before but which certainly struck a chord with me - the ‘nagging state'.
The author was totally exasperated about the number of warning signs about things that could only be described as the bleeding obvious. The more I read the article the more I realised how true it was. Wandering down to Waverley Station in Edinburgh that evening, huddled under my umbrella, sheltering from yet another glorious Scottish summer's day, I heard an announcement: "Due to today's wet weather, please take more care on the station - the platforms may be slippery."
