When American architect Louis Sullivan coined the phrase "form follows function" in 1896, he was talking somewhat poetically about the construction of buildings. Yet, the same principle has served many industries well ever since, including technology design and development. Fast forward more than a century and apply this in a 21st-century context, many of the same design principles remain true, but we should also consider what we know now that Sullivan didn't at the time.
