Wimbledon is imminent, which gives me a (thin) excuse to talk about gold as an investment … starting with my favourite fact: Despite being mined for more than 5,000 years, all of the gold ever extracted from the ground would fit onto a tennis court with a height of 19 metres. Isn't that crazy? Think about all of the jewellery, gold bars in vaults, pirate treasure (?) and Olympic medals in existence – melt it down and you end up with a cuboid just poking out of the roof of Centre Court.
