Data from the ABI shows that almost 19% of annuity contracts in 2011 were enhanced annuities, up from 13.6% in 2010 and 9.3% in 2009. We consider this a success. Estimates of the proportion of people that could qualify for enhanced annuities, however, range from 40% to around 70%. Even on the most conservative of these estimates, the current proportion of annuitants claiming enhancements falls a long way short.
