The number of the ‘oldest old' in the UK is growing at an unprecedented rate. The latest research from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has shown that the number of centenarians (that is, people who live to or beyond the age of 100) has risen by 73% over the past decade to 13,350 in 2012. The ONS also identified that more than half a million people aged 90 and over were living in the UK in 2012. What does this mean?
