BP fined $373m by Justice Department

The US Department of Justice has fined BP $373m for environmental and fraud crimes.

It includes a $50m criminal fine for breaking the Clean Air Act, relating to a 2005 Texas refinery explosion which killed 15 people. The oil giant was also hit with a $303m fine for price-fixing; on charges it manipulated the propane market in 2004. BP will be monitored by an independent body for three years to ensure it complies with the terms of Thursday's agreement, the US government announced.
