Opposition give white paper lukewarm reception

The white paper on pensions reform has been given a lukewarm reception by the two opposing political parties, with the Liberal Democrats saying while some parts are welcome, the reforms will ultimately fail to deliver a pensions solution.

The Conservatives have welcomed key aspects of the government's long-awaited pension reform plans, but have demanded a re-examination of others, with Philip Hammond, shadow work and pensions secretary, expressing support for moves designed to restore the earnings link and to tackle the unfairness suffered by women; but insisting the deal enabling public sector workers to retire at 60 must be re-examined.
