Pensioners in poverty increasing-DWP

The number of pensioners living in poverty is increasing, according to new figures from the DWP.

The latest Household Below Average Income figures show pensioners in poverty rose from 300,000 to 2.5 million (before housing costs) and 200,000 (after housing costs) to 2.1 million between 2005/06 and 2006/07. However, the overall figures for the last 10 years are more encouraging with the number of pensioners in absolute poverty falling 1.9 million after housing costs.
