L&G cuts non-disclosure claims rate in 2007

The number of critical illness claims (CIC) rejected by Legal & General (L&G) for non-disclosure last year has dropped from 2006, it announced today.

The firm turned down a total of 7.7% of claims in 2007, a fall of 36% from the previous year. It says it paid more than £110m, at an average £60,000 each, in CIC last year, up from £92.1m in 2006 - a total of 88.2% of all claims made. In addition, L&G says CIC claims were primarily for cancer, terminal illness, heart attack, stroke and multiple sclerosis. A total of £179m was also paid on life insurance claims, representing 96.3% of claims received.
