Drugs limit FTSE losses

The FTSE 100 has ended the day with a slight fall of 8.8 points, or 0.14%, to 6,440.6, as gains by drugmakers offset earlier heavy losses by miners.

Intercontinental Hotels was the biggest loser with a fall of 2.27% to £12.46, closely followed by property companies Persimmon which dropped 1.82% to £14.04, while British Land slipped 1.69% to £14.50. Miners fell on lower metal prices and concerns China will tighten monetary controls to limit growth, with Antofagasta falling 2.06% to 510.25p, while Vedanta Resources declined 1.86% to £13.74. However, drug companies were among the biggest gainers as GlaxoSmithKline climbed 1.44% to £14.80, after receiving market approval in Japan for its asthma treatment Seretide/Advair and Arixtra. A...
