Pensioners in poverty down by a million in a decade

There are one million fewer pensioners living in poverty than there were in 2000, according to the latest figures from the ONS.

The proportion of pensioners who are better off, however, is more likely to have been boosted by working longer past the retirement age. In 2000, earnings from work made up 8% of the average pensioner's income compared to 19% in 2009. Income from the state over the same period fell proportionately from 52% to 43%. Despite the fall in pensioner poverty, there is a large disparity between pensioners' incomes.
