IFS: UK facing US-style jobless recovery - papers

Britain could suffer a jobless recovery like the one currently engulfing the US, an Institute for Fiscal Studies' (IFS) economist warns.

Mike Dicks, chief economist at Barclays Wealth who wrote the IFS report, says: "The structural level of unemployment in the UK has gone up a bit. It could easily be as high as 8%." His warning will come as a blow to the Treasury, which expects unemployment to fall to 6.1% by 2015, the Telegraph reports. The IFS has also urged George Osborne to consider a ‘plan B' for the economy as fears of a double dip recession grow, according to the Daily Mail.
