The government has exempted the lowest paid members of the NHS pension scheme from reforms next year.
Public sector workers and the government are negotiating over reforms to their pensions that will see them pay more in, work longer and take reduced pensions. Following a consultation, the government has raised the earnings threshold at which NHS workers must begin paying more into their pensions. Under the new arrangement, all members earning up to £26,557 in 2012/13 will not pay the 3% increase in contributions next year. Previously the threshold was £15,000.
