Almost 50% of consumers would find government compulsion to save into a private pension scheme helpful, research suggests.
According to a Friends Life survey of 2,000 people, half backed compulsion while a further 30% said they had no opinion. Another 24% would view compulsion as another form of tax and said they would not want to pay it, Friends Life said. The insurer said 61% of respondents revealed they are not confident in their own ability to save enough for retirement without government or employer intervention.
