FOS doubles staff to cope with PPI claims

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has doubled its staffing levels since April last year to deal with volume of complaints about mis-sold payment protection insurance (PPI).

The organisation said between 30 million and 40 million PPI policies have been sold and at the end of June there had been about 4.5 million complaints about them. It added that it currently takes upwards of 1,000 complaints a day and received 99,000 complaints in the first half of the year. A spokesperson said: "Since April 2011, we've doubled our size of staff. We put out a plan and budget at the turn of their year saying that we would be increasing our staff by 500 to 600 people, and a large proportion of those would be dealing with PPI complaints."
