European body investigates personal pension single market

A European pensions authority is investigating the viability of creating a single market for personal pension products across the continent.

The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) launched a consultation on the idea yesterday. A discussion paper was published after the body was asked by the European Commission (EC) to give technical advice on the prudential regulations and consumer protection measures needed to create a single market. EIOPA said the paper was intended to engage stakeholders at an early stage in the project by gathering their views on a wide range of issues relating to personal pensions.
