'Catch us if you can': small firms defiant on auto-enrolment

A number of smaller employers are planning to avoid auto-enrolment (AE) compliance citing the legislation as "designed solely to allow the government to steal more money".

The Institute of Directors (IoD) survey on auto-enrolment of employers in January this year revealed a negative attitude towards pensions with a number of employers with up to 50 staff planning to avoid AE duties completely. One employer commented: "We will not be spending any money doing something we do not want to do. Catch us if you can." While another said: "We plan to make every effort to avoid this piece of legislation, designed solely to allow the government to steal more money."
