Parliament clears way for Brexit

Peers back off on Article 50 amendments after MPs vote them down

Parliament has passed the Brexit bill, allowing Prime Minister Theresa May to trigger Article 50 as early as this week.

The bill, which is expected to receive Royal Assent and become law on Tuesday, was passed after peers backed down over amendments such as EU residency rights and a veto on the final Brexit deal. The result came as Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced she wanted to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence towards the end of the Brexit negotiations, the BBC reported.
