Theresa May has promoted David Gauke to secretary of state for Work and Pensions after forming a minority conservative government in the wake of the snap General Election.

The MP for South West Hertfordshire since 2005 has replaced Damian Green in the role after he was promoted to first secretary of state in the reshuffle following the election. Gauke spent the last seven years as a relatively unknown junior minister in the Treasury. He was made exchequer secretary to the treasury in 2010 and was promoted to financial secretary in 2014. Theresa May then promoted him to chief secretary to the Treasury in 2016 when she became leader of the Conservative party and prime minister in July 2016, making this his second promotion under May.
