The Pensions Regulator (TPR) has toughened up on auto-enrolment (AE) compliance in the past year, having used its formal regulatory powers 50,068 times compared to 8,812 times in the year before.
Its annual auto-enrolment analysis showed TPR issued 33,716 compliance notices, 12,181 fixed penalty notices, 187 statutory demands for information, and four warrants in 2016/17. It also issued 1,193 unpaid contributions notices, 2,527 escalating penalty notices, 260 statutory inspection notices, and closed a total of 39,801 cases. TPR said the usage of its formal powers had risen in proportion to the volume of employers who reached their staging dates during the year.
