When filtering down the choice of assets beyond equities and bonds, investors should look at the common underlying risks as they do the ingredients on offer at coffee shops, argued GSAM's David Copsey.

"If government bonds are not going to be the thing that drives your return and are not necessarily the bastion of diversification - where do you go next?," asked the Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) executive director. Copsey acknowledged filtering down the choice of asset classes and investment strategies to compensate in terms of diversification, could be "pretty bewildering" for an investor.
