Angela Merkel to step down as German Chancellor in 2021

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has announced she intends to step down from her role in 2021 and will not be seeking re-election as party leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in December.

Merkel, who has been Chancellor in Germany since 2000, has said she will not be seeking re-election as CDU leader in December but plans to remain as Chancellor until 2021.  The centre-right party has been weakened in recent election results and Merkel said she takes "full responsibility" for these losses, having lost support following her 'open-door' policy for refugees.  Two state elections held this month in Bavaria and Hesse led to historically low results for the party, with the CDU losing ten percentage points on its results in 2013.  Euro falls as Merkel's coalition talks col...
