There has, over the past few years at least, been a growing consensus defined benefit pension schemes are unsustainable.
This consensus began in the private sector – where most final salary schemes are now closed to new members, if not future accrual as well. It has now filtered down to the public sector, where Lord Hutton’s Public Service Pensions Commission is set to deliver his recommendations for reform in March – reforms which are likely to include contribution increases and a possible move to a career average scheme.
