Simon Evan-Cook: Balancing internal versus external risks

It is probably just the onset of a mid-life crisis but I am trying to ramp up the exercise and cut down on sugary food and booze. It is hard to know how far to take it though. Is ‘a bit more' exercise and a ‘bit less' unhealthy food enough? Or should I go the whole hog, exercising constantly while consuming only the most virtuous - and therefore boring - food and drink? I have certainly caught myself looking at professional athletes recently and thinking, wow, they must feel great.
