The history of football's offside rule dates back to the early 19th century and it was incorporated as one of the original laws of the game in the 1863. Since then, differing interpretations of what constitutes offside - should it be the second to last player, at least three players or even no players? - led to several amendments, with the last major change coming in 1990.
