PM response to ASP petition 'disappointing'

The pensions industry has been left disappointed by the Prime Minister's response to a petition calling for the abolition of the 70% tax charge on funds left from Alternatively Secured Pension.

In its response to the petition, which closed on 31 March with 3,949 signatures, the Prime Minister’s Office reiterates “the government's policy is that tax-relieved pension savings should provide an income for life for the member, rather than being a means of passing on capital through the generations”. However, Neil Marsh, managing director of Hornbuckle Mitchell, says the response shows the Prime Minister has failed to address the basic unfairness of high tax charges levied on funds left from ASP.
