Joint analysis on the risk profile of defined benefit schemes reveals 43% of DB members are still in an open scheme.
The findings, published by The Pensions Regulator and the Pension Protection Fund in ‘DB Pensions Universe Risk Profile' or 'Purple Book’, reveal larger DB schemes are most likely to still be open in some way, although it admits 58% of schemes are closed to new members. In addition the document, which shows a snapshot of the position of DB schemes as of 31 March 2006, reveals the total deficit of the sample schemes, calculated on a section 179 (s179) basis - the PPF funding level, is £33.8bn, which accounts for about 83% of the sample group of 5,800 schemes.
