More than eight million homeowners have an estate worth more than the current Inheritance Tax (IHT) threshold of £275,000, claims new research from Scottish Widows.
The results of a survey of Britain’s wealth, conducted by YouGov and based on data from the Centre for Economics and Business Research, reveals the average household wealth after debt stands at around £258,000, just 6% under the current IHT threshold. But 43% of those whose homes are valued above the threshold say they have no idea what the IHT figure is, and when told what it was 6.7m thought the level was unfair.
