In a quick-fire response, the Liberal Democrats claim pension plans laid out by the Tories yesterday will not aid the poorest two-thirds of pensioners but make many poorer still.
Liberal Democrat shadow work and pensions secretary Steve Webb MP suggested the Conservative Party is unlikely to regain any public show of ‘trust’ towards them regarding pensions again as a result of their past performance. Webb said pensioners would not easily banish from their minds it was the Tories who ‘broke’ the earnings link in 1980 which then devalued pensions for the following following 17 years. “These proposals are far less generous than they sound and will actually increase pensioner poverty,” said Webb, adding it was a further case of 'buyer beware'.
