DC schemes favour employers over workers

Almost half of employers feel defined contribution (DC) pension schemes only work 'fairly well' for employees.

Consultants Watson Wyatt claim during a workshop at the Employee Benefits Summit earlier this month, almost 80% of senior human resource and benefit managers said they believe DC schemes work well for employers. However, while 78% believe, as a basic design concept, DC schemes can meet employer needs extremely or fairly well, only 42% thought they worked at least fairly well for employees. In addition, 35% of the 50 workshop attendees, from the some of the UK’s largest employers, said DC schemes could only meet employee needs “with difficulty”.
