Pensions: Challenges and Choices finds that the average UK male can expect to live another 21.7 years once they reach age 65 by 2050, based on Government Actuary’s Department data. However, if life expectancy increases at the rate experienced between 1980 to 2000, then men should expect another 27.7 years of life when reaching age 65 in 2050. Compounding the ageing issue is the low birth rate, which although projected to increase somewhat from 1.7 to 1.75 children per woman, will remain below the 2.07 level required to keep the population stable.
