The position of Defined Benefit (DB) schemes in deficit worsened in July 2007 with the total deficit just over £45bn from £30bn at the end of June 2007.
However, the deficit has almost halved from one year ago when it reached £80bn. Figures from the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) highlight the volatility of DB funding. The aggregate funding position (total assets minus total liabilities) of almost 7,800 DB funds fell to a surplus of £51bn in July 2007 from a surplus of £99bn in June 2007. However, this is an improved position compared to July 2006, when schemes had a funding deficit of £31bn.
